Customer Engagement Lessons from the Top Performing SCORE Chapter in the US

Over the course of any given year the SC Lowcountry chapter of SCORE helps hundreds of local business owners with one-on-one business mentoring and conducts scores of educational workshops …all for free …and it is run completely by volunteers.

The chapter does receive support from the SCORE national headquarters, but its success over other chapters with the same access is notable. It was named “Chapter of the Year” for the state (again) in 2020, and a national survey ranked it #1 in for client engagement. All of this with only 30 followers on its Facebook page.

So how does an organization with no social media presence excel at attracting and serving clients?

The right people

It starts with having the right people in place. The SC Lowcountry SCORE chapter gathers its volunteers every month to assess its talent and identify its challenges.

Virtually every member is extraordinarily professional and dedicated. Each volunteers anywhere from 1–10+ hours a week as a mentor, grant writer, technical administrator, workshop leader, event coordinator, and/or whatever else is needed. Collectively they are committed to serving any and all needs of the local small businesses and they seem eager to help in any capacity.
